Clinical Evaluation of Colonic Diverticulosis


Abstract
Diverticular disease of the colon is a relatively uncommon disease in The Orient, but recently its incidence was progressivly increased. So we studied retropectively thirty-seven patients who were diagnosed as colonic diverticulosis for five year
period
between january, 1988 and December, 1992 at Jungng Gil Hospital Incheon.
Of 37 cases with diverticular disease of the colon, 20 cases were operated emergecy, 9 cases were operated electively and 8 cases were treated conservatively. Mean age was 37.5 in male, and 41.2 in female. In admission, following diagnosis were
made:
acute appendicitis (54%), diverticulitis (30%), intestinal obstruction, acute pancreatitis, etc. In site, cecum was most common site and in number of diverticulum, 15 cases were single and 5 case, multiple in the emergency operation but all of
the
cases
were multiple in the elective operation.
There were no significant difference of the clinical finding, physical examination and laboratory finding betwene the emergency orperation group and acute appendicitis group. In the emergency oepration, 16 cases (80%0 were underwent the
appendectomy and
diverticulectomy but in the elective operation, 7 cases (78%) were underwent right hemicolectomy. Post-operative complication was found 1 case (5%) of the emergency operation. One case of emergency operation was found the remained diverticulosis
in
the
post-operative barium enema but was asymtomatic for the follow-up period.
In case of diverticulitis found at the time of operation, if possible, diverticulectomy and appendectomy appear to appropriate treatment and post-operative barium enema and continuous follow-up is necessory.
